Analysis of Prices of Essential Commodities as on 6th July 2023

As per the analysis of prices of essential commodities based on the report issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended on the 6th of July 2023 has increased by 0.7%.

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) is a tool to measure the short-term inflation of 51 basis commodities. The weekly analysis is carried out on the basis of data collected from 17 cities of Pakistan and the report is issued by PBS every Friday. The report covers the comparison of prices with the previous week (WoW) and with the corresponding week of the previous year (YoY).

As per the report on SPI for the week ended on the 6th of July 2023, an increase is recorded in 24 items, a decrease in 10 items, and no change in prices of 17 items.

Increase in Prices

Based on the analysis of prices of essential commodities for the week, an increase is recorded in the prices of tomatoes, onions, potatoes, wheat flour, gur, sugar, shirting (avg quality), hi-speed diesel, garlic, matchbox, curd (dahi), daal mash, fresh milk, basmati rice (broken), rice IRRI, mustard oil, prepared tea, long cloth (Gul Ahmed), mutton, beef (with bone), Lifebuoy soap, powder milk, georgette (avg quality) and cooked daal (average hotel). Decrease in Prices

During the week, a decrease in ten items has been recorded that include bananas, chicken, eggs, LPG 11.67 kg cylinder, vegetable ghee 2.5 kg tin (Dalda/Habib), cooking oil, vegetable ghee 5 kg (Dalda/Habib), daal masoor, daal moong and daal channa (gram). The comparison of prices with that in the last week and the corresponding week of last year is given in the following table:-

No change in the prices of 17 items has been observed during the week which include plain bread small, powder salt (National/Shan), chilly powder (National 200 gm), Lipton Yellow Label Tea (190 gm), cooked beef at average hotel, Capstan cigarettes, printed lawn (Gul Ahmed/Al-Karam), gents sandals (Bata), gents sponge chappal (Bata), ladies sandal (Bata), electricity charges, gas charges (upto 3.3719 MMBTU), firewood whole, energy saver (Philips 14 watt), Sufi washing soap (250gm), petrol (super) and telephone call charges. The comparison of prices with the corresponding week of last year (YoY) is given in the following table:
