Overview
Throughout the entire week, there was a consistent decline in the performance of the Pakistan Stock Market. The KSE 100 index, which began the week at 41,904 points, dropped to 41,301 points by Friday, June 16, 2023. Each day witnessed a continuous decrease, with a total loss of 603 points. The main cause of this downward trend is the non-finalization of the installment of the IMF program. Almost all of the demands of the IMF had already been met, however, IMF has concerns about measures announced in the Federal Budget which is now a hurdle in the materialization of the tranche.
In addition to the above, several other factors are also causing the weak performance of the stock exchange. These include the country’s declining economic condition, political instability eroding investor confidence, devaluation of the Pakistani Rupee, a significant reduction in foreign exchange reserves held by the central bank, decreased foreign remittances and exports, unfavorable conditions for industries and businesses due to import barriers, soaring inflation leading to higher operational costs, and a decrease in the purchasing power of the general population resulting in reduced demand.
